REDCAT Audio System Benefits

by Craig Patzel

August 24, 2010

District 145 classroom teachers have been using a new audio system while instructing students this year.  The REDCAT is a wireless, single speaker, infrared, audio system that fills the classroom with clear, even sound, regardless of where the teacher is standing or which direction they are facing. Teachers have been using the systems for only a couple of weeks and we're already seeing positive results.  Students are more attentive to instruction because sound completely fills the room and students don't have to stress their ears to hear every word spoken by the teacher.  Classroom teachers have also noticed a definite decrease in the discomfort of their throats and vocal chords because they do not have to talk over the air system.  The REDCAT allows them to speak in a normal voice, while the system amplifies sound throughout the room.

Below are additional thoughts from teachers at W.I.S.

For additional information regarding the REDCAT audio system you can visit the website at: http://www.lightspeed-tek.com/redcat.aspx

Mr. Vance used the REDCAT during the 2009-10 school year and shared the following letter with the Board of Education last May.

"This past year I was able to have the REDCAT system put in my classroom because of a student who had an hearing impairment.  I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciated using it.  It made an absolutely huge difference not only for that student but for all the students in my class.  The heating/air conditioning system at WIS is extremely noisy.  My students struggled to hear me.  It was  frustrating for them and me.  I knew that they were missing out on instruction.  The strain of having to talk over the noise was wearing on me as well.  With the REDCAT system my students were able to hear me clearly.  If I ever forgot to put it on in the morning, they quickly reminded me.  I did not have to talk over the constant drone of the air conditioning system.

Another aspect of the system I liked was the ability to hook the system up to my computer so the students could hear sound on instructional websites I used in the class.  It was fantastic.  Thank you for allowing me to use it.  I highly recommend it."

Kirk Vance, W.I.S. 5th Grade

"Students are more focused during both instructional and work times because the teacher's voice can be heard above other distractions.  When students share writing or information
with the class they can use the REDCAT system so that their peers can easily hear what they are saying.  If teachers forget to turn them on, students remind them right away, so it is something they prefer.  Teachers voices are not as strained and tired at the end of the day."
